As an extension of play, this week we asked our OVC group to re-present their ink blots as larger paintings.  By giving them certain “constraints”, the students opened up to new possibility.  Instead of ordinary paintbrushes, students picked random objects from a grab bag to use as their painting tool - objects like string, toilet rolls, newspaper, straws, and pipe cleaners.  The squeals of surprise were the best and these children had a ball playing and learning their new painting tools.

Tip from the Olivia Gude of the Spiral Workshop: instead of buying packets of coloured paper, instead give students the opportunity to paint as many saturated colours and hues as possible using tempera or acrylic paints.  Not only does it make learning about colours more fun, it becomes the student’s own investigation.  Use these papers for cut-out collages!

Another tip: what to do with all that left-over paint?!  Why mix it into an ugly grey pot or throw it down the drain?  Use it up on extra pieces of blank paper and add it to your class’ collection of painted papers.
